Philadelphia Eagles are struggling with injuries all season, and it wasn’t any different on Monday night against New York Giants. The Eagles entered the game with just three wide receivers, only to see two of them going down during the game. It turns out that the situation was so serious that the team was prepared to send backup quarterback Josh McCown on the field as a wideout.
Speaking with NBC Sports Philadelphia’s John Clark after the game, which Eagles won 23-17 in overtime, McCown revealed that he almost stepped in as a WR towards the end of the game.
“I was ready to go,” – said McCown. “We had the helmet ready to go. The equipment guys were all over it. Had the radio-less helmet because you can’t have two green dots on the field at the same time.”
Eagles ended up deciding they wouldn’t use McCown, instead they had tight ends Zach Ertz and Joshua Perkins play as WR.
McCown already played once as a WR in his career, when he was a member of Detroit Lions in 2006 against New England Patriots. In that game he had 15 yards and two catches.
“We were ready to roll,” – he added. “Shoot, I’d get in there and go. Obviously, as a quarterback, you know the offense. I guess it was like 12 years ago in Foxborough I had to go in and do it.”
