Drew Brees will become a free agent soon, but he doesn’t plan to test the free agency or wait for too long to sign a new deal. The 39-year-old quarterback plans to stay with the New Orleans Saints as long as they will have him.
“I’m not in the mood to make anything secretive,” – said Brees. “It’s the same way I felt two days ago. It’s the same way I felt 12 years ago. That is that I’ll be here as long as they’ll have me, hopefully.“
Given his age, the Saints will likely opt to offer him another short-term deal, like they did in 2016. Brees received $24.25 million for 2017 season, which made him the fourth most paid player in NFL. The Saints can’t place a franchise tag on Brees due to a clause in his current contract, so they will have to get the deal done before March 16 in order to keep other suitors away.
Drew Brees had another great season, leading Saints to an 11-5 record and win against the Carolina Panthers in the playoff opener. Unfortunately, the season ended in a disappointing 24-29 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in the divisional round, although the Saints had a 24-23 lead 14 second before the end.
“The sting of that loss is still pretty fresh for us all, and I know we would all say that we thought we’d still be playing right now. But I think as we look back at the season and reflect, we have a lot to be proud of,” – said Brees on Tuesday. “I feel like we have a great window of opportunity [for a Super Bowl]. I’ve been a part of talented teams in the past throughout my career, though, that have not lived up to expectations. I’ve also been a part of teams that were just gutsy and gritty, and surpassed expectations. So the bottom line is that success is dependent upon your willingness to work and the way that guys care about each other and the sense of urgency. So while I think we do have a talented team, I know that each year you have to go out and prove it.“
