Dolphins Trade Former 1st Round Pick Charles Harris to Falcons

Miami Dolphins are moving on from defensive end Charles Harris just three years after taking him with the 22nd overall pick in 2017 NFL Draft. Dolphins decided to give up Harris for cheap, taking just a seventh-round pick from Atlanta Falcons for him.

Harris played 14 games last season (five starts), contributing with 22 tackles and 0.5 sacks.

While he received praise for his work ethics during the three years he spent in Miami, the truth is that Harris never reached the potential that made him worthy of a first-round pick. He had career stats of just 61 tackles and 3.5 sacks, which made it hard for the Dolphins to stick with him as they are entering the second phase of their rebuilding process.

On the other hand, Falcons made a low-risk move that might bring them great benefit. They are in the process of shuffling their edge rush after letting Vic Beasley walk out in the free agency and declining fifth-year option on Takkarist McKinley, so Charles Harris provides them with depth.

The change of scenery and different defense scheme might bring out the best out of Harris, and he might become a solid starter in the NFL. If not, the Falcons only lost a seventh-rounder pick, which is always a bigger gamble compared to move like this.
