The Miami Dolphins traded their All-Pro returner Jakeem Grant to the Chicago Bears on Tuesday. According to NFL Network, the Dolphins will receive a sixth-rounder in 2023 from Chicago in exchange for Grant.

Grant leaves Miami after an underwhelming start of the season that saw him fumble the ball twice in four games. He is set to become a free agent after this season, having agreed to a reworked contract in September that voided the last two years of the four-year, $19.7 million extension he inked in 2019.

Drafted in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL Draft as a wide receiver, Jakeem Grant emerged as one of the better returners in the league in recent years. He accumulated 978 yards and three touchdowns on punt returns as a pro while also having 2,206 yards on kick returns and two scores. As ESPN points out, Grant’s five non-offensive TDs rank 11th in the league among active players.

Grant occasionally played a role on Miami’s offense, making 91 catches for 1,001 yards and five touchdowns. He contributed with two receptions in 2021 but has a negative seven yards.

The Bears probably want Grant to make a run for the number three option at the wideout position while also giving him a share of return duties previously handled by rookie Khalil Herbert.
