The Miami Dolphins are pleased with the job that head coach Mike McDaniel has done since joining the franchise. So pleased, in fact, that they have decided to reward him with a new long-term contract.
McDaniel initially inked a four-year deal that was set to expire after the 2025 season. Now, he is reportedly tied to the franchise through 2028, just like the team’s starting quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa.
McDaniel became a head coach of the Miami Dolphins in 2022 after a stint as an offensive coordinator with the San Francisco 49ers under Kyle Shanahan. He compiled a 20- 14 regular-season record and led them to back-to-back playoff berths while turning the Dolphins into an offensive juggernaut and helping Tagovailoa become a Pro Bowl-caliber signal-caller.
Tagovailoa, selected fifth overall in 2020, struggled in his first two seasons as a pro and was widely considered a bust. But since McDaniel took over, the Alabama product emerged as one of the most prolific passers in the league. That was on full display last season when he led the league with 4,624 passing yards while also throwing for 29 touchdowns.
The only dig at McDaniel is that he has yet to win a playoff game, something that Miami hasn’t done since 1999. However, the club’s front office and ownership reportedly believe that this will happen sooner rather than later, and the new extension is a great show of this confidence.
