Miami Dolphins gave up a fifth-round pick back in April to acquire running back Matt Breida from San Francisco 49ers. However, it appears that the Dolphins still aren’t convinced that Breida has a future in their backfield.

According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, Dolphins haven’t had talks with Breida about a contract extension since acquiring him, and it remains unlikely that they’ll do it this season. The 25-year-old RB currently has one year left on his deal, which guarantees him a $3.3 million salary, and is set to become an unrestricted free agent in 2021.

Reportedly, the Dolphins want to see how will Breida perform in their offense before making any significant commitment to him. Also, the organization is cautious due to the financial consequences of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Matt Breida entered the league in 2017, signing with San Francisco as an undrafted free agent. In the past three seasons, he proved as a valuable contributor for the team in both the running and passing game.

Breida’s career stats include 1,902 rushing yards and six touchdowns alongside 67 receptions for 561 yards and four TDs. He was also in the NFL’s top 10 in yards per carry in each of the past three years.
