Miami Dolphins don’t want to risk wide receiver Jakeem Grant entering the free agency next season, so they decided to tie him up with a long term extension. Dolphins announced on Wednesday that Grant agreed to a four-year extension, which will keep him with the organization through 2023.

Dolphins decided to give Grant an extension despite the fact that he recently recovered from a calf injury that forced him to miss the second part of 2018. ESPN reports that the deal is worth around $24 million.

Dolphins took Jakeem Grant in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL Draft, and since then he managed to establish himself as one of best returners in the league. Grant led the NFL in yards per punt return in 2018 with 16.3 while having one touchdown. He added another touchdown as a kick returner and averaged 29.7 yards per kickoff return.

While sparingly used as a receiver in his first two years as a pro, Grant received more opportunities as WR last year. He had career-high 21 receptions for 268 yards and two TDs.

This is the second player from the 2016 class that Dolphins gave an extension this offseason after the organization made Xavien Howard the highest-paid cornerback in the league. Howard inked a five-year, $75.25 million back in May.
