The Miami Dolphins made another one in a long line of cuts this offseason involving former Pro Bowlers and big contract holders, releasing safety Reshad Jones prior to the April draft.

Jones had spent the entirety of his ten-year career in Miami after being drafted by the team in the fifth round of the 2010 NFL Draft. He worked his way up from a relatively anonymous draft pick to a team leader and a two-time Pro Bowler.

After appearing as a bench player mostly during his rookie campaign, the Atlanta native entrenched himself as the Dolphins’ starter at the strong safety position until just last year.

Jones made two Pro Bowls during his time with the team, in 2015 and 2017. The safety’s first Pro Bowl campaign was a breakout season for him, as he recorded a career high of five interceptions and a total of 135 tackles in a standout season.

The decision was made to release Jones from a five-year, $60 million contract that was signed prior to the 2017 season after a disappointing 2019 in which he played only four games before undergoing shoulder surgery.

The move will save the Dolphins $5.3 million in salary cap room, pushing the team’s league-leading total to nearly $90 million as Miami heads into a decisive offseason for the franchise’s future.
