Being patient paid off big time for the Miami Dolphins’ All-Pro corner Xavien Howard. According to multiple reports, Howard signed a new five-year contract with the Dolphins, a record-making deal for a cornerback in NFL history.

Howard already became the league’s highest-paid CB in 2019 when he inked a five-year, $76.5 million contract extension. However, the deal became less great-looking over the next two years due to contracts signed by other players playing in the same position. This prompted the Baylor product to ask for a trade ahead of the 2021 season, saying he doesn’t feel the franchise values him enough.

The Dolphins convinced Howard to stay in Miami by making several tweaks to his deal while promising to re-negotiate this offseason. The 28-year-old player responded with another Pro Bowl season in which he had 50 tackles, 1.0 sacks, 16 passes defended, and five interceptions while scoring his third career touchdown.

In recent weeks, the Dolphins reached out to Howard and his representatives, and the two sides managed to hammer out a new deal. Howard will get $50.69 million in new money while the contract becomes fully guaranteed.

Since entering the league as the Dolphins’ second-round pick in 2016, Xavien Howard has made three Pro Bowls and two All-Pro Teams. He also led the league in interceptions twice. Howard’s career stats include 241 tackles, 2.0 sacks, 71 passes defended, 27 interceptions, and three TDs.
