The Los Angeles Dodgers learned some unfortunate news after a 3-0 win over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday. Their star outfielder Mookie Betts suffered a hand fracture and will be sidelined indefinitely.
Betts was injured in the seventh inning while facing a pitch by right-hander Dan Altavilla. The 97.9 mph four-seam ball hit Betts in his left hand and sent him immediately on the ground in visible pain.
Speaking with reporters after the game, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said that Betts would most likely avoid surgery and is expected to return to action at some point in the season. But it is unclear when that might be the case.
Betts, on the other hand, said that he will see a specialist before determining his next step.
“I’m not sure. I’m honestly not sure,” said Betts. “Obviously, I’ll be watching the boys and cheering them on. Other than that, just kind of rest, maybe use it as a mental break, and be ready to go whenever it heals up.”
Betts has been having another standout season in 2024, with some analysts having him as a dark-horse MVP candidate. In 72 games played so far, Betts was batting .304 with 10 homers, 40 RBIs, and nine stolen bases.
