The Los Angeles Dodgers’ two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani continues to rack up home runs in his first year with the franchise. In a 4-0 over the Cleveland Guardians on Sunday, Ohtani hit his 46th homer of the season, tying a previous career high. He also had 46 home runs in 2021 when he unanimously won the American League MVP honors.
Ohtani homered in the bottom of the fifth, sending the ball 450 feet through the air. It was his 22nd home run that traveled 450 feet or more since he arrived in MLB. They all came since 2021, and no player had more during that span.
Ohtani now has 46 home runs and 46 stolen bases for the 2024 campaign while batting .291 with a league-leading 101 RBIs. Considering there are 18 more games to play in the season, Ohtani could easily become the first player in MLB history to have 50 homers and 50 stolen bases in a single season.
“I’m trying to be less cognizant of it,” Ohtani said through an interpreter after the game. “Just more focused on having a good feel at the plate, and whenever possible during the game … that’s what I’m trying to do and focus on.”
Fueled by Ohtani’s spectacular play, the Dodgers are currently the best team in the league. They sit at the top of the NL West with an MLB-leading 86-57 record.
