The Los Angeles Dodgers used the last hour of the MLB trade deadline to boost their injury-ravaged rotation. The Dodgers made a trade with the Detroit Tigers that saw them land right-hand pitcher Jack Flaherty.

In order to get Flaherty, the Dodgers gave up highly-rated catcher prospect Thayron Liranzo and minor league infielder Trey Sweeney. Liranzo is the third-ranked catcher in the Dodgers’ farm system, while Sweeney played 96 games for Triple-A Oklahoma City in 2024 and has a .255 batting average with 13 home runs, 62 RBIs, and 12 stolen bases.

Speaking with the media after the MLB trade deadline, Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes said that the team was in the market for an impact starter and believes they got one in Flaherty.

“Getting an impact starter was a very high priority for us, and Jack is definitely that,” Gomes said. “His command, his stuff, the swing-and-miss — we feel like that’s a real power option come October.”

Flaherty has been enjoying one of his best seasons as a pro. He made 18 starts in 2024 and currently owns a 7-5 record with a 2.95 ERA and 133 strikeouts.

The Dodgers saw their rotation decimated by injuries lately throughout the 2024 campaign. Walker Buehler and Bobby Miller were limited to eight and seven games, respectively, due to injuries, while ace Clayton Kershaw just recently made his season debut after undergoing shoulder surgery in the offseason. Yoshinobu Yamamoto, the Dodgers’ prized offseason acquisition, is currently on the 60-day injured list, and it is unclear when he might return.
