The reigning World Series champions, Los Angeles Dodgers, made another major move early in the MLB offseason. After signing two-time Cy Young winner Blake Snell in free agency, the Dodgers now handed a large contract extension to infielder Tommy Edman.

According to the Dodgers’ announcement, Edman signed a five-year, $74 million deal. The contract also comes with a club option for 2030. Reportedly, Edman will defer $25 million over 10 years and receive a $17 million signing bonus as part of the agreement.

The Dodgers were a fan of Edman for several years before managing to acquire him from the St. Louis Cardinals in July in a three-team trade that also included the Chicago White Sox. Edman was recovering from wrist surgery at the time and only managed to play 37 games in the regular season, batting .237 with six homers and 20 RBI.

Edman ended up proving his true value for the LA team in the playoffs. He had a stellar showing that saw him make 20 hits on a .328 batting average with two homers and 13 RBIs as the Dodgers won the World Series.

The Pontiac, Michigan native was particularly impressive in the National League Championship Series against the New York Mets. He batted .407 with one home run and 11 RBIs while picking up NLCS MVP honors.
