The Detroit Lions announced on Monday that their star defensive end Aidan Hutchinson underwent surgery to repair fractured fibula and tibia.
The team said that Hutchinson is expected to make a “full recovery” and that there is no timeline for his return to action. Reportedly, the team expects Hutchinson to miss the remainder of the season, considering this type of injury comes with six to eight months of recovery.
Hutchinson was hurt during Sunday night’s 47-9 win over the Dallas Cowboys. While trying to sack Cowboys’ quarterback Dak Prescott and get him on the ground, Hutchinson had his foot collide with teammate Alim McNeill’s leg, which caused a fracture to his fibula and tibia.
This is an unfortunate turn of events for Hutchinson, who had a terrific start to the season. Before going down, the second overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft racked up 7.5 sacks and was in the conversation for the Defensive Player of the Year award.
“Hate it for Hutch. That’s tough. It was tough,” Lions head coach Dan Campbell told reporters. “He’s in good hands right now. He’s being taken care of. He’ll stay back here, and obviously, he’s going to be down for a little while. So, that’s tough and it’s hard when you lose somebody like him, but we’ll know a lot more after this and obviously wish him the best.”
