The Sacramento Kings’ star point guard De’Aaron Fox opted to pass on the opportunity to sign a new extension with the franchise. Instead, according to a report by ESPN’s Shams Charania, Fox is looking to get a new deal next year when he can have a bigger payday.
Fox recently became eligible to ink a three-year, $165 million maximum extension, a type of deal that Sacramento was more than happy to give him. However, by waiting until the summer of 2025, Fox will be able to get a four-year deal worth $229 million.
Fox is set to enter the fourth year of the five-year, $163 million rookie extension he signed back in 2020. He is scheduled to become a free agent after the 2025-26 NBA season.
Despite the recent development, there are reportedly no questions surrounding Fox’s commitment to the Kings. He wants to remain the face of the franchise and intends to play in Sacramento for years to come.
De’Aaron Fox is coming off a career-best season, at least in terms of production. He averaged career-highs in points (26.6) and rebounds (4.6) in 2024-25 while also dishing 5.6 assists and leading the league with 2.0 steals per game.
However, Fox’s great performances didn’t help the Kings to get back to the playoffs last season. They finished ninth in the Western Conference and were eliminated in the final round of the Play-In Tournament by the New Orleans Pelicans.
