You can count on pitcher David Price to be with the Boston Red Sox for years to come. After the 2018 MLB season wraps up, Price can opt out of the remaining four years of his seven-year, $217 million contract with the Red Sox. According to the 33-year-old, however, that won’t happen.
“Why would I leave here to go to a team that’s not as good as this team?” – said Price during his chat with MassLive. “I came here to win. I don’t worry about all the other stuff. Just come here to win. We’re going to have a really good chance to do that.”
David Price signed with the Red Sox in 2016, and according to his contract, he is set to receive $31 million in 2019 and $32 million in both 2020 and 2021. Although this will represent the biggest salary for a pitcher in baseball history, Price is starting to look like he is worth all that money. After a bumpy start of the season, he is now 5-0 with a 2.04 ERA in the last nine starts he made for Red Sox. During 2018 season, he is 14-6 with a 3.57 ERA in 27 starts.
Playing good in the regular season, however, doesn’t seem to mean much to David Price. He previously said that he wants to win in the postseason, and recently repeated the statement once again.
“I could go 35-0 in the regular season with a zero [ERA], and it wouldn’t matter,” – Price told reporters. “I need to win in October. That’s that; [the] regular season means nothing for me.”
Before joining the Boston Red Sox, David Price also played for Tampa Bay Rays, Detroit Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays. During his 10 years in the league, Price made five All-Star appearances while winning AL Cy Young Award in 2012. His MLB career stats include 141–74 record while he managed 3.25 ERA and 1,838 strikeouts.
