The Dallas Cowboys training camp competition for starting kicker looks much clearer as of Monday. The team announced that it had released veteran Tristan Vizcaino, leaving former soccer player Brandon Aubrey as the only kicker on the team.

Vizcaino is out after struggling so far in the camp. He converted 22 out of his 35 attempts in the past eight practices and had four straight misses, all under 40 yards, during practice on Saturday. The 27-year-old player previously spent time with the Los Angeles Chargers and the Arizona Cardinals, among other teams.

Aubrey, who spent time with USFL’s Birmingham Stallions after transitioning from soccer to football, also didn’t impress too much so far in the training camp but was better than Vizcaino. He made 26 of 35 FG attempts over the same period and converted five out of seven tries on Saturday.

However, the fact that Aubrey is the last kicker standing doesn’t guarantee him the starting job. The Cowboys are reportedly looking toward the free-agent market and might add a veteran if the price is right. They did something similar last season when they had unproven kickers in training camp before signing Brett Maher.

There are several high-profile free-agent kickers left on the market, including Robbie Gould and Mason Crosby.
