D.C. United isn’t giving up on their star midfielder Luciano Acosta. According to ESPN’s Sebastian Salazar, United already made a significant contract offer to Acosta, who is set to become a free agent at the end of the season.

D.C. United is forced to act quickly Salazar reports, as several top European clubs are eyeing Acosta and have expressed their interest including Manchester United, Lyon and PSG.

“From the club perspective, D.C. United perspective, they have tabled what they consider a very competitive offer and have had what they call very positive discussions with Lucho’s agents in just the last two weeks,” – says Salazar. “They are hopeful to sign him, but time is working against them.”

Luciano Acosta had a breakthrough season in 2018, managing to score 10 goals and provide 15 assists in 34 games of the regular season. He had a slower start this year, as he scored two goals and contributed with only one assist in eight games. Despite this, D.C. United remains really keen on having the 24-year-old stay with the organization for the long term.

United’s head coach Ben Olsen recently spoke with ESPN’s Taylor Twellman about Acosta and acknowledged that it might be hard to keep him but that the team will do their “best”  trying.

“We prefer to have him, but this is the sport of soccer,” – Olsen explained. “People move on, players move on, and there are a lot of players out in the world who are impactful players coming to this league year in and year out. Every transfer window there’s now players coming in that help. But I love the kid. I love what he does on the field. He’s fun to watch, our fans love him. We’ll do our best to keep him.”
