The Arizona Coyotes see defenseman Jakob Chychrun as part of their long-term plans and have decided to sign the 20-year-old on a six-year contract extension. Although the team didn’t disclose the financial terms of the deal, ESPN reports that Chychrun will have an annual salary of $4.6 million.

We are extremely pleased to sign Jakob to a six-year contract extension,” – said Coyotes’ general manager John Chayka. “Jakob is a young, highly skilled defenseman with an incredibly bright future. He has battled through some adversity with injuries the last two years, but we remain confident that he has the necessary size, talent and work ethic to be one of our core players for many years to come.

Jakob Chychrun was unable to play at the start 2018-19 NHL season due to an offseason knee surgery, but he ended up returning on ice the same day he signed the new deal.

I’m thrilled to be with the Coyotes for the next six years,” – said Chychrun about his new deal. “Arizona is where I want to be. I’m excited about our group moving forward and I can’t wait to be a big part of it.”

Jakob Chychrun was selected 16th overall by Arizona Coyotes in 2016 NHL Draft. He made his professional debut the same year, and ended up playing 68 games in which he contributed with seven goals and 13 assists.

Chychrun’s sophomore season in the league was shortened to 50 games due to injuries. He ended the season with four goals and 10 assists.
