The Dallas Cowboys have reportedly signed veteran wideout Martavis Bryant to a contract. It is a curious move for the Cowboys, considering Bryant hasn’t played in the NFL since 2018.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Bryant visited the Cowboys for a workout on Tuesday and showed enough to land a deal with the franchise. He will initially land on the practice squad, which should give him time to get familiar with the offense and return to NFL shape.
The Cowboys have CeeDee Lamb, Brandin Cooks, and Michael Gallup at the top of their depth chart. They are likely seeing Bryant as a possible No.4 wideout in case second-year player Jalen Tolbert and rookie Jalen Brooks struggle in the coming weeks. Dallas also has a couple of wide receivers in Jalen Moreno-Cropper and Tyron Johnson on their practice squad.
Martavis Bryant entered the league in 2014 as a fourth-round selection by the Pittsburgh Steelers. He spent four years with the franchise but only played in three seasons due to being suspended for the entire 2016 campaign. He had 126 catches for 1,917 yards and 17 touchdowns as a Steeler.
Bryant was traded to the Raiders ahead of the 2018 season, getting 19 catches for 266 yards in eight games. He had his campaign cut short due to an injury before being suspended by the league once again.
Since leaving the NFL, Bryant has played football in the Canadian Football League, Indoor Football League, and Fan Controlled Football. He was most recently a member of the Vegas Vipers in XFL.
