The Dallas Cowboys learned some devastating news on Monday. Their starting quarterback, Dak Prescott, is dealing with a hamstring injury and is expected to miss “multiple” weeks.
Prescott was hurt in a 27-21 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. The injury likely happened when Prescott threw a pass to Jalen Brooks late in the third quarter.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Prescott will seek a second opinion on his injury with hopes of better news. However, the most likely scenario is that he sits out for at least a couple of weeks and possibly more.
Prescott’s injury comes at the worst possible moment for the Cowboys. After entering the season with Super Bowl aspirations, they find themselves in danger of missing the playoffs altogether. The team is currently 3-5 after a three-game losing streak and sits third in the NFC East behind the Philadelphia Eagles (6-2) and leading Washington Commanders (7-2).
With Prescott out, the Cowboys will likely turn to backup Cooper Rush, who went 4-1 in five starts in 2022. They also have former third-overall pick Trey Lance on their roster.
After having one of his best years as a pro in 2023, Prescott signed a record four-year, $240 million contract extension with the Cowboys in the offseason. However, his performances haven’t been up to the standard of the highest-paid player in the NFL. Prescott is completing 64.7% of his passes, representing the second-worst mark in his career, and has thrown for 1,978 yards, 11 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.
