Dallas Cowboys starting quarterback Dak Prescott won’t play football again in the 2024 NFL season. The news was confirmed by Cowboys’ owner and general manager Jerry Jones during his weekly appearance on 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday.
Prescott suffered a hamstring injury during a scramble in a 27-21 loss to the Atlanta Falcons in Week 9. He has since visited multiple specialists, with the consensus opinion being that he needs to get repair procedures done in order to avoid issues in the future.
“It’s a more common injury in hockey, and he’s got doctors that are very familiar with how to repair that,” Jones said. “And his prognosis is wonderful. It just means that we’re not going to have him the rest of the year.”
Prescott is now expected to be out for three months. But even without surgery, he was scheduled to miss at least six weeks. On top of that, there is no incentive for Dallas to push for his return to the field in 2024, considering they are facing long odds to make the playoffs at 3-6.
Prescott signed a four-year, $240 million extension with the Cowboys in the offseason, becoming the highest-paid player in the history of the league in terms of annual salary. He will finish the campaign with a 64.7% completion percentage, 1,978 passing yards, 11 passing touchdowns, and eight interceptions.
