Dallas Cowboys have been healthy most of the season, but recently their linebackers’ core has taken a significant hit due to injuries. In an attempt to provide some extra depth on LB position, Cowboys went on and signed former Super Bowl MVP Malcolm Smith on Tuesday.

Smith was a free agent after playing with Jacksonville Jaguars earlier in 2019. He made two appearances with the Jags, but failed to get on a stat sheet.

After previously losing Leighton Vander Esch, Cowboys found out earlier this week that rookie Luke Gifford will be out for the season. Gifford broke his arm in Sunday’s win against Los Angeles Rams and was placed on injured reserve. Dallas might also be without veteran LB Joe Thomas for a couple of weeks, as he injured his knee in the Rams’ game.

Malcolm Smith is best known for his stint with Seattle Seahawks, where he played for the first four years of his career. Although he was never a starter in Seattle, Smith played a notable role in the team’s Super Bowl XLVIII, when he returned an interception for a touchdown and also had a crucial fumble recovery. Smith left Seahawks in 2015 and has since played with Oakland Raiders and San Francisco 49ers alongside Jacksonville.
