Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte expressed his dismay following the Spurs’ shock 2-0 loss at home to Aston Villa on Sunday. The Spurs boss branded last season’s top-four finish “a miracle” during talks with reporters following the defeat.

“Last season we made a miracle,” Conte commented. “Because we played only one competition, and we played with 12 or 13 players and they didn’t have injuries in the last 15 games. We played with our best players every game because, I repeat, we played only the league. Don’t forget with three games to go Arsenal were four points ahead of us and that we finished 20 points less from Manchester City and we did a miracle, but I knew the situation.”

Conte’s team has dealt with a slew of injuries as of late, including Brazil star Richarlison and playmaker Dejan Kulusevski. Throughout the upset against Aston Villa, Tottenham managed to get just two shots on target.

In order to become more competitive, Conte is looking to strengthen his squad with signings during the January transfer window. The Italian manager revealed that during talks with the clubs, he expressed his belief that the team could improve but that further investment would be necessary to facilitate sustainable long-term changes.
