The Washington Commanders announced on Tuesday that the franchise released linebacker Jamin Davis. The former Kentucky product was Commanders’ 19th overall pick in 2021.

Davis is the latest first-round pick that wore his welcome in Washington. The franchise traded former first-round defensive ends Montez Sweat and Chase Young in 2023 before moving on from first-round wide receiver Jahan Dotson during the offseason.

Overall, Commanders have now moved on from three of the last four first-round picks they made between 2020 and 2023. The only player left on the roster is corner Emmanuel Forbes.

Considering that Davis was selected by the previous regime and didn’t do much to justify his high draft position, the decision by Commanders to release him isn’t all that surprising.

Over the first three years of his pro career, Davis was a regular feature in Commanders’ defense. He played 45 games, including 36 starts, and had 269 tackles, 7.0 sacks, 10 QB hits, four pass deflections, and one interception.

However, the arrival of Dan Quinn as the new head coach this season brought a role change for Davis. He was moved to the defensive end position, one in which he was largely inefficient. As a result, he played just five games, none as a starter, and recorded just 13 tackles.
