Columbus Crew found an unlikely replacement for departing goalkeeper Zack Steffen. The team announced over the weekend that they have signed Curacao national team goalie Eloy Room.

Room showed a great form during his country’s surprising run on this year’s Gold Cup, and Crew decided to react quickly and get a reliable option on the goal. The 30-year-old was a free agent, having been recently released by PSV Eindhoven.

“We are excited to have a player as experienced and proven as Eloy join Columbus Crew SC,” – said Crew’s general manager Tim Bezbatchenko said in a statement. “Eloy is a talented goalkeeper whose leadership and shot-stopping ability will help strengthen our club. We believe Eloy’s background competing at the European and international level will allow him to contribute to Crew SC immediately.”

Eloy Room spent his youth and major part of his professional career with Vitesse. After fifteen years with the club and more than 150 games played, Room decided to join PSV in 2017.

Room was born in the Netherlands but elected to represent Curacao on the international level in 2015. He made 30 appearances for the senior team so far.
