Indianapolis Colts offensive lineman Jack Mewhort decided to retire from professional football despite being only 26 years old and playing just four seasons in the NFL. Colts’ announced Mewhort’s decision on Wednesday.

I would like to thank the Irsay family and the entire Colts organization for giving me the opportunity to live a childhood dream,” – said Mewhort said in a statement released by the team. “The fans and the city of Indianapolis have treated me like one of their own, and I am forever grateful. Wearing the Horseshoe was one of the biggest honors I have ever known, and I will always bleed blue. Go Colts!

Mewhort’s retirement comes only a few months after he signed a one-year, $1.5 million deal with the organization. He supposed to be a backup option behind Matt Slauson and rookie Quenton Nelson.

Jack Mewhort gave this organization everything he had in his four seasons with the team,” – said Colts general manager Chris Ballard in a statement. “He fought through injuries and played through pain. Jack is a selfless player who always carried a team-first mentality. He is revered among his coaches, teammates, and staff, and his leadership will be missed in the locker room. We’re appreciative of Jack’s dedication to the Colts, and we wish him the best moving forward.

Jack Mewhort entered the league in 2014 when the Colts selected him in the second round of that year’s NFL Draft. After starting 30 games in his two first seasons in the league, Mewhort began struggling with injuries. In 2016 he was limited to 10 games after suffering a knee injury during the preseason. Then another knee injury in 2017 caused him to be ruled out for the season after playing five games.
