The Cleveland Guardians are making sure one of their best and most talented players, All-Star third baseman Jose Ramirez remains a part of their organization for years to come. According to ESPN’s MLB insider Jeff Passan, the Guardians locked Ramirez to a five-year extension that will keep him in Cleveland through at least the 2028 season.

Reportedly, the agreement is worth $124 million. Ramirez is now guaranteed to earn $150 million, considering he was already under contract for 2022, and the Guardians picked up his 2023 option. He also receives a full no-trade clause as part of the agreement.

Ramirez’s deal represents the first $100+ million contract the Guardians have given to one of their players, making it the richest in franchise history. But it’s safe to say that the 29-year-old player, who batted .266 and had 36 homers and 103 RBIs in 2021, earned it.

Ramirez was one of the most consistent Guardians players in recent years, making the All-Star team three times in his career. In addition, he made the All-MLB Second Team in shortened 2020 MLB season when he also finished as runners-up in AL MVP voting.

Since making his MLB debut in 2013, Ramirez has played 980 regular-season games with the Cleveland Indians. His career stats in the majors include a .278 batting average, 163 home runs, 540 RBIs, and 154 stolen bases.
