Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has insisted that his side is on course towards winning their first ever Champions League title, even though they fell to a 3-0 defeat against Liverpool during the first-leg of their quarter-final clash against Liverpool.

No English club has won the Champions League since Chelsea in 2012 and many expected City to break the duck this season considering their dominant form in England.

The Citizens have only lost two games in the Premier League this season, one also coming against Liverpool and the other came against Manchester United last weekend.

Guardiola said: “We need titles in Europe, but that is so complicated. To win titles we need to start with nights like this so the people understand it. Maybe not tomorrow, but with what this club has done in last 10 years in terms of creating a lot of facilities. Of course with a lot of investment, but there are a lot of people working here with the desire that sooner or later that is going to happen. Hopefully, we can do it, if it doesn’t happen this season then hopefully in the next one.”
