Denmark international midfielder Christian Eriksen has left the Seria A powerhouse Inter Milan. The Italian club confirmed the news on Friday, announcing that the two sides parted ways via mutual contract termination.

The move was expected for a while now due to Eriksen’s health condition. After collapsing at Euro 2020 this summer, the 29-year-old was diagnosed with a heart condition that required him to undergo surgery, during which he was fitted with a device known as “heart starter.” Seria A rules prohibit players who have the device to play in an official game, so Inter had no other option but to allow Eriksen to leave.

“Although Inter and Christian are now parting ways, the bond shall never be broken,” Inter said in a club-released statement. “The good times, the goals, the victories, those Scudetto celebrations with fans outside San Siro, all this will remain forever in Nerazzurri history. All the best, Chris!”

Since his collapse at the Euro, Christian Eriksen hasn’t played a single soccer game. However, retirement doesn’t seem likely for him at the moment. Eriksen indicated that he still wants to carry on with his career, which will be possible in leagues with looser rules like Netherland’s Eredivisie and Danish Superliga.

Eriksen joined Inter in January 2020 in a transfer from Premier League’s Tottenham Hotspur. He played 60 games in Inter’s shirt, scoring eight goals and helping the club with the Seria A title last season.
