It will be a while before the Kansas City Chiefs get to see wideout Marquise Brown, their prized free-agency acquisition, in action. According to Chiefs’ head coach Andy Reid, Brown is set to undergo a shoulder surgery and is expected to miss significant time.

While speaking with reporters on Friday, Reid said that Brown will be sidelined for “months.”

“Everybody’s a little different, and this [injury], not a lot of these that we have information on, so we’ve just got to wait it out and see how long it takes. We’ll see where that takes us in this process. But that’s the information we have, and we’re just going to have to hold tight on that,” Reid added.

Brown signed a one-year, $7 million contract with the Chiefs in the offseason and was expected to provide a badly needed boost to the team’s wide receiver room. However, his time with the franchise got off to a bad start as he injured his shoulder in the first game of the preseason.

It was initially believed that Brown wouldn’t need surgery to address the injury and would return at some point in September. However, with this latest development, it is now unclear whether he’ll return at all during the regular season.

In Brown’s absence, the Chiefs are expected to lean more heavily on second-year wideout Rashee Rice and rookie Xavier Worthy. They also might give veteran JuJu Smith-Schuster a more expanded role.

Marquise Brown entered the league in 2019 as the Baltimore Ravens’ first-round pick. He spent three years with the franchise before being traded to the Arizona Cardinals in 2022. During his five years in the league, Brown caught 313 passes for 3,644 and 28 touchdowns.
