Reigning Super Bowl champs Kansas City Chiefs have turned to a familiar face in attempts to plug the hole in the running back position after their starter Isiah Pacheco landed on the Injured List.
According to the NFL Network, the Chiefs signed veteran Kareem Hunt to their practice squad on Tuesday. Hunt, who has been a free agent, spent 2023 with the Cleveland Browns and rushed for 411 yards and nine touchdowns while playing a backup role.
The Chiefs have found themselves in a tough situation considering their depth behind Pacheco, who is expected to miss up to six weeks, isn’t great. Their No. 2 back, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, is currently on the non-football illness list, leaving the team only with veteran Samaje Perine and rookie fullback Carson Steele as viable options at the position.
Kareem Hunt started his pro career with the Chiefs, being their third-round pick in 2017. Hunt had a standout rookie season that saw him lead the league with 1,327 rushing yards. He also had eight touchdowns on the ground and added 53 catches for 455 yards and three TDs en route to Pro Bowl honors.
Hunt’s time with the Chiefs came to an end midway through his sophomore season when the franchise released him due to problematic off-the-field behavior. He then went to spend the next five years with the Browns, his hometown team.
