The Kansas City Chiefs won another close game on Sunday, beating the struggling Carolina Panthers 30-27 with a last-second field goal. But while their star quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, was happy about the win, he didn’t hide the fact that he would also like his team to put games to rest a bit earlier.
The win over the Panthers was the fifth time this season that the Chiefs won on their last play of the game. Additionally, eight of their 10 wins in 2024 were one-score games.
Speaking with the reporters after the game, Mahomes said that he “would love to win a game not by the very last play.”
“You always want to have some blowouts and be a little calmer in the fourth quarter, but I’ve always said it could be a good thing when you get to the playoffs later in the season knowing that you have been in those moments before, and knowing how to attack it play by play not making it too big of a moment,” Mahomes added.
The Chiefs had a 20-6 lead against the Panthers late in the second half and seemed like they would cruise to the finishing line. However, Carolina scored 10 unanswered points and went on to tie the game on a successful two-point conversion with 1:46 left on the clock.
Mahomes and co. then marched 57 yards down the field and set up a 31-yarder for their new kicker, Spencer Shrader. As the time expired, Shrader sent the ball between the uprights and kept the Chiefs in front for the AFC lead.
