The Kansas City Chiefs have placed their kicker, Harrison Butker on Injured Reserve after he underwent surgery on his left knee. Butker is expected to play again this season but will miss at least four weeks before being eligible to return to action.

The Chiefs replaced Butker with rookie Spencer Shrader, who was signed from the New York Jets’ practice squad.

Butker made 18 out of his 20 field goal attempts this season, with both of his misses coming from 50+ yards. He also made 21 out of 22 extra-point attempts.

Butker was originally drafted in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers but ended up being waived before the season started. The Chiefs swooped in to sign him shortly after, and he has been one of the most accurate kickers in NFL history since then.  He has converted 330 field goals out of 349 attempted, and his 89.2% percentage ranks third all-time.

The Chiefs will now put their kicking fortunes into the legs of Shrader, who has limited NFL experience. He played one game with the Indianapolis Colts earlier in the season and converted three out of three PTAs. Shrader also kicked in one game with the New York Jets, making both of his field goal attempts.
