The Kansas City Chiefs have found a new backup for their star quarterback Patrick Mahomes. According to NFL Network’s insider Ian Rapoport, the Chiefs have agreed to a deal with veteran signal-caller Blaine Gabbert.

The Chiefs needed to get an experience QB in the building this offseason after Chad Henne retired following a Super Bowl LVII win in February. Henne served as Mahomes’ backup for the past five seasons.

Backing up an all-time great quarterback will be nothing new for Gabbert. For the past three seasons, the 33-year-old player sat behind Tom Brady as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He appeared in one game in 2022, completing six of eight passes and throwing for 29 yards and one touchdown.

Blaine Gabbert entered the league in 2011 as the 10th overall pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars. He became the Jags’ starter in his rookie season, but a combination of poor play and injuries prevented him from solidifying himself as the team’s primary option under center. Gabbert was traded to the San Francisco 49ers after three seasons and later went on to suit up for the Arizona Cardinals and the Tennessee Titans before signing with the Bucs in 2019.

Gabbert started a total of 48 games as a pro and has a record of 13-35 as a starter. His NFL stats include 56.4 percent pass completion, 9,302 passing yards, 51 TDs, and 47 interceptions.
