Chelsea has beaten other top European clubs and secured the services of RB Leipzig’s star attacker Christopher Nkunku. According to influential soccer insider Fabrizio Romano, Nkunku signed a contract with the London club but will join the club only after finishing the 2022-23 season with the Bundesliga side.

Chelsea has been monitoring Nkunku for a while now and even got the player to undergo medical several months ago. At the time, it was believed that the club was only doing its due diligence, but it turns out that the plan was to get everything sorted out for a deal with the 25-year-old Frenchman.

There was a great interest in Nkunku’s services in the summer, but Leipzig managed to convince the player to sign a new deal. According to the contract terms, Nkunku would stay one more season with the club and could leave in the summer of 2023 if someone pays a release clause of $65 million.

Chelsea didn’t mind Nkunku’s agreement with Leipzig, but wanted to have the player on their payroll as soon as possible in order to avoid competition. Reportedly, Nkunku was also monitored by Manchester United and Liverpool, among other clubs.

Christopher Nkunku enjoyed a superb season in 2021-22, scoring 35 goals and dishing 20 assists in all competitions for Leipzig. He is playing on a high level this season as well, having 12 goals and two assists in Bundesliga alone.
