Los Angeles Chargers made their first big roster move ahead of the start of the new season, deciding to make defensive tackle Corey Liuget a free agent. Chargers announced their decision on Friday, confirming that they won’t pick up the option for 2019 on Liuget’s contract.

Liguet, who was the longest tenured player on Chargers’ defense, had an underwhelming 2018 season, which was cut short to just six games due to suspensions and injuries.  He was due to make $8 million in 2019.

While talking about the team’s decision, Los Angeles’ general manager Tom Telesco hinted that the 28-year-old might return to the team in the future despite becoming a free agent.

“While we did not exercise the 2019 option in Corey’s contract and he will now become a free agent on March 13, the door is certainly not closed for a possible return in the future,” – said Telesco in a statement.

Corey Liuget entered the league in 2011, when the Chargers took him 18th overall in that year’s draft. He was a started for the better part of his career, and proved himself as a reliable option despite never reaching his full potential.

Liuget career stats include 274 tackles, 24.0 sacks, six forced fumbles, six fumble recoveries, and one defensive touchdown.
