The Los Angeles Chargers Pro Bowl outside linebacker Joey Bosa revealed on Friday that he had suffered a broken hand earlier this month and underwent surgery to fix the issue.
According to Bosa, he suffered a fracture on his left hand during a joint practice with cross-town rivals Los Angeles Rams. The joint practice took place on August 4.
Bosa then had a procedure on his hand at a later date but didn’t expect that the issue would prevent him from playing in the season opener. He already has several practices under his belt and can be a full participant thanks to a protective club on his hand.
According to Bosa, he plans to wear the club, which protects the hand from impacts and provides stability until he fully recovers.
“There’s no reason to rush and cause any problems,” Bosa explained. “Not that there really could be, other than some pain of a bunch of hardware in there, keeping my bones together, so it’s not really a risk of much of an injury … Once I have complete range and grip strength, which I pretty much already do, I’ll be out of it.”
This represents the latest setback for Joey Bosa, who dealt with a number of injuries in the past two seasons. The injury issues limited him to 14 games and just nine starts in 2022 and 2023 combined while largely limiting his production.
The lack of availability made Bosa a trade candidate in the offseason, but he ended up agreeing to a restructured contract to remain with the franchise. However, he now has no guaranteed money past this season and could be cut next year if he continues struggling to stay on the field.
