Forward Isaac Okoro has agreed to a contract that will see him stay with the Cleveland Cavaliers for another three years.
The former Auburn product became a restricted free agent this offseason. While this gave the Cavs an option to match any deal Okoro receives from another team, the franchise opted to do the negotiating themselves and lock their important bench piece for the foreseeable future.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Okoro’s new deal is worth $38 million.
Isaac Okoro entered the league as Cleveland’s fifth overall selection in 2020. He had his best season as a pro in his rookie year, averaging 9.6 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game, all of which remained his career highs.
Okoro only managed to come close to his rookie campaign in 2023-24, averaging 9.4 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game. More importantly for the Cavs, he showed significant improvements on defense and is now considered the team’s top perimeter defender.
By signing Okoro, the Cavs have likely put a finishing touch to their eventful offseason. Besides hiring Kenny Atkinson as a new head coach, the franchise also extended several key players, including All-Star Donovan Mitchell, forward Evan Mobley, and center Jarrett Allen.
The Cavaliers now hope to build on last season’s successful run that saw them finish fourth in the Eastern Conference and reach the second round of the playoffs for the first time since LeBron James left the franchise in 2018.
