Serena Williams’ return to tennis got off to a poor start. The 40-year-old was eliminated from 2022 Wimbledon on Tuesday, losing in three sets to unseeded Harmony Tan.

Williams hasn’t played tennis since she suffered a leg injury at last year’s Wimbledon, and the rust was obvious. She was slower to the ball than usual and missed the type of shots that were automatic for her in the past. But despite this, the American was still quite close to making it to the second round.

After a 5-7 loss in the first set, Williams handled Tan in only seven games in the second. The third set saw Williams serving for the match while having a 5-4 lead. She only needed two more points to take care of business, but it wasn’t meant to be.

Tan bounced back to tie the third set at 5-5 and later secured the win in a 10-7 tiebreak. She is now set to play no. 32-seeded Sara Sorribes Tormo for a chance to advance to the third round and secure her best-ever result at Grand Slam tournaments.

“Today I gave all I could do, you know, today,” said Williams after the match. “Maybe tomorrow I could have gave more. Maybe a week ago I could have gave more. But today was what I could do. At some point you have to be able to be okay with that. And that’s all I can do.”

Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea returned to club training on Thursday, following a minor injury during Spain’s Euro 2020 qualifier clash with Sweden earlier this week.

After appearing to get injured while taking a goal kick, the Spanish player signaled to the bench that he required further medical attention. De Gea was subsequently replaced by Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga. Fortunately for Spain, no further goals were conceded as the game ended in a 1-1 stalemate.

For Manchester United, however, this injury came as much-dreaded news. The Red Devils are set to face Premier League leaders Liverpool at home on Sunday and will be desperate for their number one-choice goalkeeper player to be fit come match day.

Fortunately for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, De Gea began his rehabilitation process on Thursday morning, meaning that there is some hope that he might be fit in time for the much-anticipated clash. Further good news for United is that backup option Sergio Romero is also preparing to start against Liverpool should the need arise.

One of the brightest stars of the past two decades in world soccer has decided to hang up his boots after a long and successful career in both South America and Europe.

Diego Forlán, the Uruguayan striker who spent years dominating defenses for club teams and for his country’s national team, announced his retirement from soccer at the age of 40.

Forlán hadn’t played since appearing in a handful of games for Kitchee SC in Hong Kong last season.

The striker played for youth academies in his native Uruguay before making the move to Independiente in Argentina back in the mid-90s.

After starring there, he signed for 11 million Euros for Manchester United in 2002, making the jump to Europe.

Forlán spent two and a half up-and-down seasons in England before moving to Spain, where he’d have his biggest club success. He scored 128 goals in 240 career La Liga games for Villarreal and Atlético Madrid, including a memorable 116th-minute strike to win the 2010 Europa League Final against Fulham.

The striker then spent a short time with Inter Milan before moving back to South America in 2012 and then bouncing around different clubs around the region and in Asia.

Forlán also excelled with his country’s national team, scoring 36 goals in 112 career caps. He won the Golden Boot Award as the top scorer at the 2010 World Cup.

He plans to move into a managerial role after his retirement from playing.

Manchester City and Watford have punched their tickets to the FA Cup final after triumphing in the semi-finals over the weekend.

Man City was the first team to qualify after a 1-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday night at Wembley.

City didn’t turn in one of its best performances, but a 4th minute Gabriel Jesus goal was enough to propel them to the next round. Brighton came close on a few occasions to knotting up the score in the second half, but they were unable to break through.

Manchester City will look to win its first FA Cup final since 2011 against Watford, which won a thriller against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday.

Wolves started off strong in their matchup against Watford, taking a 0-1 lead with a 36th-minute goal. They doubled their lead when Raul Jiménez scored in the 62nd minute.

However, Watford orchestrated an incredible comeback.

Gerard Deulofeu scored in the 79th minute to bring Watford within a goal, and then a penalty was whistled against Wolves in stoppage time. Troy Deeney converted to send the game to extra time, where Deulofeu scored again to send Watford to the final.

Watford will attempt to make history and win their first FA Cup in the final against Man City on May 18th.

NBA decided it won’t suspend Draymond Green and Bradley Beal for their fight on Sunday’s Golden State Warriors vs. Washington Wizards game. Instead, the league handed a $50K fine to Beal and $25K fine to Green.

Green and Beal engaged in a fight towards the end of the game’s second quarter. Beal hit Green in the face while fighting for position, which caused Green to grab Beal. Being locked up, the two fell on the ground. Players from both teams rushed in to separate the fight. After the situation calmed, Green and Beal were ejected from the game.

“I don’t know what I’m supposed to do if someone hits you twice,” – Green told ESPN at halftime. “Man, you’re taught as a kid not to allow that. What was I supposed to do?”
Beal apologized to his teammates after the incident saying he “needs to show better leadership and control.“

“Things were said. Things were done throughout the whole game. But I’m not going to go into detail,” – Beal commented on the incident.

While Beal was lucky to avoid the suspension, two Washington Wizards players Markieff Morris and Carrick Felix did get suspended for leaving the bench after the altercation. This, however, won’t hurt the Wizards in a big way. Morris is inactive and is recovering from hernia surgery, while Felix is a bench player for the team.

Although the Golden State Warriors got the win against the Wizards, they went on to lose against the Detroit Pistons on Sunday night and now have a 4-3 record. They will face the Los Angeles Clipper on Monday night and try to get out of the early slump.
Washington Wizards, on the other hand, are 4-2 after the win against the Sacramento Kings. They will have few days off, facing the Phoenix Suns on November 2.
