Quarterback Shedeur Sanders, the son of Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, finally heard his name being called at the 2025 NFL Draft. Sanders was drafted in the fifth round by the Cleveland Browns.

The Browns took Sanders with the 144th overall pick, which they acquired in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks.

Sanders was expected to be a first-round pick, being rated as the second-best quarterback prospect in this year’s draft after the University of Miami’s Cam Ward. However, Sanders experienced an unexpected slide, with Ward, who was selected first overall by the Tennessee Titans, and four other quarterbacks being selected before him.

Reportedly, the reason why Sanders waited so long was that the teams had questions about his arm strength, athleticism, and ability to adjust to the NFL after playing in a simple offense during his time at Colorado. Additionally, he had several bad interviews, and some franchises believed he would be a distraction considering his celebrity status and outspoken father.

Despite being in need of a quarterback, Cleveland passed on the opportunity to draft Sanders multiple times and even selected signal-caller Dillon Gabriel in the third round. But with Sanders still available in the fifth round, the Browns finally decided to roll the dice.

“We felt like it wasn’t necessarily the plan going into the weekend to select two quarterbacks, but we do believe in the best player available, we do believe in positional value. We didn’t necessarily expect him to be available in the fifth round,” said Brown’s general manager Andrew Berry.

Sanders led Colorado to a 9-4 record in 2024, throwing for 4,134 yards, 37 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. He was honored as Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and had his No. 2 with the Buffaloes retired.

The Green Bay Packers haven’t had a true No. 1 wide receiver ever since Davante Adams left the Lambeau Field in 2022. After failing to find one through the draft, the franchise is now reportedly ready to make a big swing and trade for Pittsburgh Steelers’ mercurial wideout George Pickens.

According to Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz, the Packers have engaged in talks with the Steelers about Pickens and are “serious” in their interest. Pittsburgh, on the other hand, has been open to calls about the 2022 second-round pick.

Schultz adds that Pickens is “more available than people think” and that several other teams are considering making a move.

Pickens emerged as the Steelers’ top wideout in recent seasons but there are plenty of reasons why the franchise might be keen on letting him go. The most obvious reason is that they are not ready to pay him at the top of the market after they acquired Pro Bowler DK Metcalf earlier in the offseason and signed him to a lucrative extension.

Additionally, Pickens showed flashes of great talent but has been inconsistent at times and drew criticism for his behavior on the field.

The Packers likely believe that Pickens can thrive and reach his full potential with a change of scenery. He would become a part of one of the NFL’s youngest teams and have a stable quarterback situation unlike the Steelers’ veteran-driven roster and questions surrounding the signal-caller position.

Since entering the league, Pickens caught 174 passes for 2,841 yards and 12 touchdowns.

The New England Patriots are close to addressing one of their biggest problems in recent seasons: lack of star power in the wide receiver position. According to Chad Graff of The Athletic, the Pats are hosting free agent All-Pro receiver Stefon Diggs for a visit.

The Pats have struggled to land a game-changer at the WR position in recent years, despite making attempts to land the likes of Brandon Aiyuk and Tee Higgins. But if they manage to land a proven playmaker in Diggs, that could soon be forgotten.

Graff points out that the Pats and Diggs are yet to finalize a contract agreement. However, if the visit goes as planned, that would be just a matter of time.

Stefon Diggs would immediately slot into the No. 1 wide receiver role with the Patriots and the main target for the team’s talented quarterback Drake Maye. This is likely why Diggs is attracted to New England, as a high number of targets would allow him to rebuild his value after a down year in 2024.

Diggs is coming off his least-productive season as a pro, although injuries played a significant part in that. He was limited to just eight games, catching 47 passes for 496 yards and three touchdowns as a member of the Houston Texans.

Prior to suiting up for the Texans, Diggs also played with the Minnesota Vikings and the Buffalo Bills. He has 857 career receptions for 1,0491 yards and 70 TDs while receiving four Pro Bowl nods and being named First-team All-Pro in 2020.

The Los Angeles Rams released veteran wide receiver Cooper Kupp on Wednesday. The move came after the team failed in their attempts to trade the Super Bowl LVI MVP.

The Rams informed Kupp that they intend to trade him in early February, but failed to find a team that was willing to take on his contract. Kupp had one year left on his three-year, $80.1 million extension he signed ahead of the 2022 season.

By releasing Kupp, the Rams will save $15 million in cap space. However, they will also take on cap hits of $14.78 million in 2025 and $7.48 million in 2026.

Kupp also confirmed his release via a post shared on social media.

“Thank you for these shared moments. Thank you LA for welcoming my family with open arms and allowing us to grow here,” Kupp wrote on X. “Next chapter starts now. Best is yet to come.”

Cooper Kupp had his best season as a pro in 2021, when he achieved the triple-crown by leading the league in receptions (145), receiving yards (1,947), and touchdowns (16). He then set the NFL record for most catches in the playoffs with 33 while helping the Rams win the Super Bowl LVI and being named the game’s MVP.

However, Kupp’s production significantly declined since then as injuries limited him to 33 games in the past three seasons. He finished the 2024 with 67 receptions for 710 yards and six TDs.

Star defensive end Myles Garrett is staying with the Cleveland Browns after all. The two sides have agreed to a record extension that will make Garrett the highest-paid non-quarterback in the league’s history.

The Browns announced Garrett signed a four-year extension but didn’t disclose the financial terms of the agreement. Multiple reports say that the deal is worth $160 million, giving Garrett an annual salary of $40 million, and comes with $123.5 million in guaranteed money and a no-trade clause.

Garrett handed in a trade request earlier this year, saying that he wanted to join a team that would compete for a Super Bowl. At the time, the 2023 NFL Defensive Player of the Year indicated that a new contract offer wouldn’t change his stance.

However, the Browns remained adamant that they had no intention of trading Garrett and rejected advances from other teams. Instead, they focused on presenting Garrett with their vision for the future of the franchise and handed him a contract offer that, it turned out, he couldn’t refuse.

Myles Garrett established himself as one of the best defensive players in the NFL since the Browns selected him first overall in the 2017 NFL Draft. He made six Pro Bowls and earned four First-team All-Pro selections while racking up 102.5 sacks.

However, Garrett only made the playoffs twice with the Browns and had to endure several disappointing seasons including the last one, in which Cleveland went 3-14.

The Las Vegas Raiders addressed their need for a starting quarterback by making a trade with the Seattle Seahawks that landed them veteran signal-caller Geno Smith.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Raiders will send a third-round pick (No. 92) in the 2025 NFL Draft to the Seahawks in exchange for Smith. It is the pick that Las Vegas received when it sent star wideout Davante Adams to the New York Jets last season.

After seeing below-average play from their quarterbacks in 2024, the Raiders were expected to either draft a quarterback or pursue free-agent options. Instead, the franchise opted to reunite Smith with head coach Pete Carroll.

Carroll brought Geno Smith as a backup in Seattle in 2019 and then gave him an opportunity to start after the team moved on from Russell Wilson ahead of the 2022 season. Smith responded with a Pro Bowl campaign that also saw him win the NFL Comeback Player of the Year award.

Smith just finished his most productive season as a pro, leading the Seahawks to a 10-7 record while completing 70.4% of his passes and throwing for 4,320 yards and 21 touchdowns. However, that was still not enough for the franchise to give him a new contract, which caused friction between the two sides.

Reportedly, the Raiders are already working on a new deal for Smith that will give him a salary between $40 million and $50 million annually.

The Seahawks, on the other hand, will likely find their new starting quarterback in free agency and are expected to make a run for Sam Darnold.

The San Francisco 49ers reportedly agreed to trade their All-Pro wide receiver Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders. The 49ers will receive a fifth-round selection in the 2025 NFL Draft in exchange.

Samuel previously requested a trade from the 49ers after an exit interview with head coach Kyle Shanahan. The wideout wanted a change of scenery after a disappointing campaign while his non-guaranteed salary for 2025, the last year of his contract, also played a part.

The Commanders are now committed to paying Samuel $17.5 million in 2025 while the 49ers are set to take a $31.5 million dead money hit due to a contract restructure from September.

Samuel emerged as one of the most versatile offensive players in the league since being selected in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He had his best season as a pro in 2021, earning First-Team All-Pro honors and Pro Bowl selection after having 77 catches for 1,405 yards and adding 14 touchdowns from scrimmage.

However, Samuel’s production dipped since then and he failed to reach 900 yards receiving in any of the past three seasons. Last season he had 61 catches for 670 yards and three TDs.

The Commanders now hope that they can help Samuel rediscover his past form and have him as one of the top weapons on offense for their talented young quarterback Jayden Daniels.

The 49ers, on the other hand, got the most they could for a player who was already a strong candidate for being released.

The Los Angeles Rams didn’t have to wait long to hear from teams after placing their quarterback Matthew Stafford on the market. According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, the New York Giants and Las Vegas Raiders have shown interest in trading for Stafford in recent days.

The Rams recently allowed Stafford and his agent to explore his market value after the two sides were unable to come to an agreement on a contract extension. Stafford is reportedly looking for at least $50 million annually while the LA team is hesitant to go that far.

Multiple teams have reached out to Stafford and his representatives to gauge his interest in joining them with the Giants and Raiders being among the most aggressive suitors. Both teams are reportedly ready to match Stafford’s demands in terms of a new contract.

Stafford, who signed a four-year, $160 million extension ahead of the 2022 season, was in a similar situation last offseason but managed to come to a temporary solution with the team. The Rams reworked his contract to give him a $5 million salary bump for 2024 but lowered his 2025 salary from $32 million to $27 million in the process.

Stafford, who helped the Rams win a Super Bowl ring in 2021, completed 65.8% of his passes last season while throwing for 3,762 passing yards, his lowest during a campaign in which he played at least 11 games. He also added 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

It remains to be seen whether the Rams end up moving on from Stafford. The team is expected to ask at least a first-round pick to part ways with him.

The Miami Dolphins are moving on from Pro Bowl running back Raheem Mostert. The Dolphins announced on Friday that they have released Mostert while also parting ways with tight end Durham Smythe and cornerback Kendall Fuller.

The moves will bring the Dolphins some breathing space against the salary cap. By moving from these three players, the franchise is expected to save close to $14 million.

Mostert joined the Dolphins ahead of the 2022 season and immediately put up his best season as a pro by rushing for 891 yards and three touchdowns. He followed that up with a Pro Bowl campaign in 2023, in which he had 1,012 yards on the ground and league-leading 18 touchdowns.

However, Mostert’s production took a sharp decline last season. Injuries and inconsistency caused him to lose his starting job and he ended up only rushing for 278 yards and two touchdowns.

“Very thankful for his time with the Miami Dolphins, and this gives them a chance to get younger and gives him a chance to pursue a ring elsewhere,” Mostert’s agent Brett Tessler said in a statement.

By moving on from Mostert, the Dolphins will enter the 2025 season with De’Von Achane and second-year player Jaylen Wright as their leading backs. Achane had 1,499 yards and 12 touchdowns from scrimmage last season while Wright contributed with 249 rushing yards in a backup role.

The Philadelphia Eagles are champions once again. Carried by efficient offense and disrupting defense, the Eagles dominated the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX en route to a 40-22 win.

It was the second Super Bowl win for the Eagles and the first one since 2018. The Chiefs, on the other hand, failed to become the first team in NFL history to get a three-peat.

After each team punted on their respective opening plays, the Eagles marched 69 yards down the field and scored the first touchdown of the game. The opening score came with their signature “Tush Push” play that once again proved unstoppable.

The Eagles just continued to put points on the board while frustrating Chiefs’ superstar Patrick Mahomes on the defensive end. Mahomes was intercepted twice in the first half and it resulted in Philly touchdowns on both occasions including Cooper DeJean’s pick-six.

The third quarter brought more of the same. The Eagles didn’t take their foot off the gas, getting a 34-0 lead late in the third quarter. Kansas City finally managed to get some points after that, but the deficit proved to be too much to overcome even for the defending champions.

“This is the ultimate team game. You can’t be great without the greatness of others. Great performance by everybody — offense, defense, special teams,” Eagles’ head coach Nick Sirianni said after the game. “We didn’t really ever care what anyone thought about how we won, or their opinions. All we want to do is win.”

Eagles’ quarterback Jalen Hurts received the Super Bowl MVP honors after completing 17 out of his 22 pass attempts and throwing for 221 yards and two touchdowns. Hurts also rushed for 72 yards on 11 carries and had a TD on the ground.
