Carlos Alcaraz won the 2023 Queens Club Championship on Sunday; his first-ever grass-court ATP title. This victory saw the 20-year-old return to the number one spot on the ATP world rankings.
Despite getting the match off to a slow start, Alcaraz defeated Alex De Minaur 6-4 6-4 in the final, securing his fifth ATP title of the year and 11th of his career.
Given the tournament’s close proximity to Wimbledon, many view Alcaraz as a major challenger to Novak Djokovic for the British Grand Slam title.
“Of course, recovering the No. 1 before Wimbledon, it gives you extra motivation,” Alcaraz stated. “It gives you extra confidence coming into Wimbledon. But it doesn’t change too much if I play Wimbledon as the No. 2 or the No. 1.”
By reclaiming the number one spot, Alcaraz becomes the second-youngest man in the Open era to be ranked number one going into Wimbledon. The youngest was 19-year-old Boris Becker in 1987.
Last year, Alcaraz made it to the fourth round of Wimbledon, losing to Jannik Sinner.
