Carlos Alcaraz delivered an impressive performance against Novak Djokovic, beating the 24-time Grand Slam winner in straight sets to claim the 2024 Wimbledon title. This was the second Wimbledon title in a row for Alcaraz and his fourth Grand Slam winner.
Alcaraz and Djokovic met in the finals of the 2023 edition of the tournament as well, producing a five-hour, five-set thriller that could have gone either way before the Spaniard prevailed. But this time, it was quite the opposite.
Alcaraz got the break in the first game and then rushed to a 5-1 lead in the first set before winning it two games later. The second set was more of the same, going to Alcaraz’s favor with the same result (6-2).
Djokovic showed some life in the third set and, at one point, held a 5-6 lead, hinting he could pull off one of his famous comebacks. But there was no comeback this time, as Alcaraz pulled level and then won the set in tie-break to win the tournament.
Alcaraz has now won all of his four Grand Slam final appearances while becoming the third-youngest male tennis player in the Open era to win four Grand Slams, behind Mats Wilander and Bjorn Borg.
“In an interview when I was 11 years old, I said that my dream is to win Wimbledon,” Alcaraz said during the trophy presentation ceremony. “So I’m repeating my dream.”
For Djokovic, this marked a missed opportunity to break the record with Margaret Court for most Grand Slam titles in history. Still, it was an impressive feat to get to the Finals, considering he underwent knee surgery just four weeks ago.
“Huge congrats to Carlos,” Djokovic said after the match. “[He] deserved this win today. He was the better player from the beginning till the end.”
