Carlos Alcaraz won a marathon match against Alexander Zverev (6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2) on Sunday to capture the French Open title. This is the third Grand Slam title for Alcaraz in his young career.
After having a great opening of the match and taking the first set, Alcaraz dropped the next two and faced a 1-2 hole. But, he embraced the challenge and went on to produce a dominant outing in the final two sets to put an end to Zverev’s hopes of winning his first major title.
Alcaraz’s win at Roland Garros was a historic one as he became the youngest male player in the Open Era to win three Grand Slams on different surfaces: clay (French Open), hard (US Open), and grass (Wimbledon). He is also only the seventh male player in history to do so.
Alcaraz’s win at the French Open is even more impressive considering that he struggled with an arm injury and didn’t play for three weeks leading to the tournament.
“It has been incredible work,” said Alcaraz after the match. “The last month, we were struggling a lot with the injury. Looking back to Madrid, I didn’t feel well. The next week there were a lot of doubts and then coming here and practising not too much. I am really grateful to have the team that I have and the people I have around.”
