The Arizona Cardinals signed veteran running back Darrel Williams to a one-year contract on Tuesday, the financial details of which were not disclosed. As a result, the Cardinals have a suitable replacement for Chase Edmonds, who left for the Miami Dolphins after three years in Arizona. Williams will join James Conner, a fellow former free agent, in the Cardinals’ backfield during the 2022 season.

Like Williams and Conner, Edmonds was also a free agent, however, he decided to depart for Miami after receiving a two-year, $12.1 million deal. Conner, on the other hand, accepted the Cardinals’ three-year, $21 million contract offer.

Williams proved to be the Kansas City Chiefs’ leading rusher during the 2021 season, finishing the season with 558 yards and six touchdowns despite suffering a toe injury that impacted his involvement during the playoffs. He also caught 47 passes for 452 yards, making him the fifth-ranked NFL running back that season.

The 27-year-old player joined the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in 2018 when he was only used sporadically. The following year, the running back began to feature more prominently in the team, managing 308 yards from scrimmage before reaching 135 rushing yards and a touchdown in 2020.
