Veteran wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald agreed to a one-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals on Tuesday, confirming his return to the NFL for the 16th season.
“No player has meant more to this franchise or this community than Larry Fitzgerald,” Michael Bidwill, the team’s president said. “In my discussions with him, it was clear that he is as driven and passionate as ever. We are thrilled he’ll be back in 2019.”
Fitzgerald, 35, has talked about retirement severally since he hit 30 years old. However, he has always maintained he would never move to another team and always wanted to retire in Arizona. Despite the retirement talks, the wide player has remained one of the best receivers in the league. In 2018, the 35-year-old led the league with 69 receptions, 734 yards receiving and six touchdowns.
Agreeing to continue playing in Arizona is good news for the Cardinals, young quarterback Josh Rosen and the new coach Kliff Kingsbury. While he may have aged, the receiver has showed to be a threat and a reliable team player in the league.
Concerning his new deal, the Cardinals did not disclose how much the player will be receiving. His current salary is $11 million and has received the same amount each year for the past three seasons.
