It didn’t take long for Calgary Flames to find a new head coach after firing Glen Gulutzan last week. The team announced on Monday that former Carolina Hurricanes coach Bill Peters will take over as the head coach for the next NHL season. Peters resigned from his position with Hurricanes on Friday after spending four years with the team.

I think it’s a very good team and I think it’s a team that’s set up to win and play the modern game,” – said Peters at the press conference. “What I talk about the modern game, when you watch the playoffs, you need defense up in the rush, you need offense from your defense. We’re going to be able to do that with what we have. The majority of the core is still in their prime and still has room to grow and a higher ceiling to be reached. There’s lots to work with and that’s exciting.

After serving three years as an assistant coach with Detroit Red Wings, Bill Peters was hired as Carolina Hurricanes head coach in 2014. He compiled 137-138-53 record during four seasons with the team, but never managed to get into playoffs.

Peters also has an international coaching experience, being an assistant for gold-winning Canadian men’s national ice hockey team, and serving as a head coach for the upcoming 2018 IIHF World Championship.

This is an individual I’m familiar with,” – said Flames general manager Brad Treliving. “I was focused on Bill. It’s based upon seeing and living it live with him over albeit a short period of time. He’s prepared. I think he’s a student of the modern game. I think he’s relationship driven with players. He’s honest and direct.
