Pro Bowl wideout Chris Godwin will get to embark on another run at the Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021. The team placed a franchise tag on Godwin on Tuesday, ensuring that the 25-year-old player will remain with the organization for at least one more year.

Godwin, who was set to become a free agent this offseason, will earn around $16 million playing on the tag. He was crucial for the Bucs’ offense during the 2020 regular season, catching 65 passes for 840 yards and seven touchdowns despite missing four games.

In the postseason, Godwin emerged as Tampa Bay’s No. 1 receiver, leading the team with 232 yards receiving and adding a TD en route to a Super Bowl LV win.

The Buccaneers drafted Chris Godwin in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft. After being a backup wide receiver in his first two years as a pro, Godwin was elevated to a starting spot following the arrival of Bruce Arians. He immediately responded with a breakthrough campaign in 2019, receiving Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors.

Tampa Bay’s decision to tag Godwin keeps the team’s offense strong but also means that their linebacker Shaq Barrett will likely play somewhere else next season. Barrett played under the franchise tag in 2020, but considering only one tag can be used in a single season, he is now headed towards free agency.
