Manchester United is reportedly close to locking one of their most important players on a long-term deal. According to multiple reports, the Premier League powerhouse is finalizing a new five-year contract with Portuguese midfielder Bruno Fernandes.

Fernandes and Man Utd reportedly engaged in negotiations last summer, but the talks have progressed slowly since then. However, a breakthrough in recent weeks has moved the needle for both sides and made the agreement possible. Fernandes is expected to ink the contract once he returns from international duty.

Bruno Fernandes is having a down year in 2021-22, having scored just nine goals to go with 14 assists in 37 games. However, this shouldn’t come as a surprise considering that Manchester United as a whole is struggling this season. This is why the club feels comfortable giving him a new contract with a significant salary bump.

Fernandes mostly impressed since joining Man Utd in a $60 million transfer from Portugal side Sporting Lisbon in January 2020. He played 117 games in all competitions, scoring 49 goals and dishing 39 assists.

After sealing the deal with Fernandes, United is expected to try and keep French midfielder Paul Pogba on Old Trafford. Pogba is a free agent in the summer and is reportedly still considering his options for the future.
