Browns Reportedly Not Interested in Extending LB Joe Schobert

Cleveland Browns’ linebacker Joe Schobert is having a great year in 2019 despite his team’s struggles and inconsistency. Schobert currently leads the conference in tackles with 116, while also having 2.0 sacks and career-high four interceptions. Still, it looks like even this won’t get him a new deal.

According to Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com, Browns are preparing for life without Schobert, who is in the final year of his deal, next season. Cabot reports that the organization made “little effort” to work out an extension with the 26-year-old and is willing to let him walk in the offseason.

Schobert himself told Cabot something similar just last week.

“I let my agent handle all this kind of stuff, but my understanding is we haven’t gotten any offers so can’t really build on it from there,” said Schobert.

Browns drafted Joe Schobert in the fourth round of 2014 NFL Draft. After the underwhelming rookie season, Schobert became a key part of Browns defense and made more than 100 tackles alongside 3.0 sacks and one interception in each of the following two years. He was also a Pro Bowler in 2017.

Despite the lack of interest from Browns to keep him, Schobert still hasn’t lost hope that he will remain in Cleveland.

“My No. 1 priority is to play the season out and do the best of my abilities and control what I can control,” Schobert explained. “I can’t really control what’s going on, what’s being said upstairs to my agent and them. I trust my agent. He’s going to do what’s best for me. I trust the Browns are going to do what’s best for the organization. In my perfect world, yeah, I’d be in Cleveland.”
